The whole community of Houk (aka Pulusuk) came out to compete on February 7th, 2011. Houk is a tiny island about two hundred miles to the west of the main lagoon of Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia, a nation which spreads across the western Pacific, just north of the equator. As always in contests on Houk, the teams are clearly divided: Blue vs. Red. Brokey, my host nephew leads the pack while Pasiano (social studies teacher for 5th-8th grades and my host father) and others cheer on the little boys during their thirty-yard dash. Field day is a great chance to show off and be silly. Races on foot or passing coconuts or weaving palm frond baskets, in groups or as individuals, last the whole day--all capped by the grand finale: name calling. I forget who won the most points, but I do remember the laughter shared by all.
