This photo was taken on May 12, 2012 at a secondary chool in Kenya. On this day, we had a Girls' Empowerment Day, during which we taught the girls various skills including HIV/AIDS prevention (proper condom use), reproductive health, and self-esteem building activities. This photo shows a group of secondary school girls forming "The Self Esteem Circle," while a teacher leads the activity in the center. Each girl said something she liked about the person next to her and then said something she liked about herself. High self esteem has been proven to help empower women to stand up for their rights and avoid risky behavior such as having unprotected sex.
