Gardens are dug up to 30cm deeper than normal. Doing so allows for locally accessible carbon such as cow manure, wood charcoal, and dried leaves and corn husks to be added. Mixing well below the surface creates carbon stores to provide roots with ample nutrients to sustain increased and robust growth even during dry seasons.
