PCV Mary Simpson, 65, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, works with Family Health Services in Baghlan Province in northwestern Afghanistan. Five clinics are operatd in the province and Mary spends a day in each a week. Mothers start coming in their sixth month of pregnancy and continue to come until the child is two years old. The mothers are checked, weighed and given oil, dry milk and wheat until the child reaches six months. The food is then transferred to the child in the form of corn, soya and milk. The mothers come in once a month to receive the food (enough protein for each day) and to have the babies weighed. Mary, who is in her sixth year as a Peacce Corps volunteer, received her RN in 1931 from Sheldon Memorial Hospital in Albion, Michigan and her BS in 1959 from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo in nursing, psychology and social science. Here Mary talks with mothers about having their babies vaccinated.
