Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Diane, RN, is administering an immunization to an Afghan girl at the Women's Clinic in the hospital in Afghanistan in1972. My Afghan nurse-midwife counterparts and I immunized hundreds of townspeople. After these brief nursing encounters with my patients, I received many personal invitations to their homes to meet their extended families and enjoy wonderful dinners with them. The Afghan dinners in their homes were absolutely delicious, the conversation most interesting and my Farsi language improved tremendously. They were very curious about where I came from, how I came to be there and about my own family and life in the USA. Many friendships were forged. There came a point in my Peace Corps service at which I realized I was learning more from the Afghan people than I was teaching. I had certain medical knowledge to impart to them, but I was learning more from them cross-culturally about living in Afghanistan and interacting with the Afghan people.
