After visiting my host family for Christmas 2004, my now-husband and I were thinking about what to do for New Year's Eve. He remembered his grandfather was from a village nearby, deep in the Balkan mountains, and we decided to catch the bus there to surprise his relatives, who he hadn't seen in over 20 years. We got off the bus, and wandered around the village while he pieced memories together trying to locate their house. We came to a house that he vaguely remembered, knocked on the door, and his 89-year old great aunt, Baba Kuna, opened the door and immediately recognized him, though she hadn't seen him since he was a young boy! They enthusiastically welcomed us into their home, and put on the greatest New Year's Eve party that I can remember!
