Cameroon

I took this photo in December of 2012 at a high school in Cameroon. The Health Club and Girls Empowerment Club partnered together to hold a series of events for the school population to commemorate World AIDS Day. The most popular part was the skit that the students presented. In the skit, a student recently finds out that she is HIV+, and her father kicks her out of the house, thinking that the disease is spread easily. In this photo, the student’s mother is explaining to her husband that their daughter cannot easily spread HIV (“You mean HIV is not like cholrea?” the father asks, to people’s amusement.). The student is welcomed back into the family and then becomes a peer educator in her community. The skit worked to reduce stigma of PLWHAs. (In the background is a poster about HIV/AIDS that the Health Club designed, based on the Peace Corps Life Skills materials.)
