Colombia

I formed a youth group focused on learning and presenting traditional Afro-Colombian music and dancing styles. A USAID SPA grant through Peace Corps Colombia provided the initial funding for the group to purchase materials and make traditional drums, flutes and other percussion instruments as well as uniforms for two traditional Colombian styles (cumbia and mapalé). In this photo of a presentation earlier this week, the lead female dancer – portraying a sorceress that bewitches the lead male dancer – is carried away on the shoulders of a male dancer to conclude this variation of the mapalé ritual. Musicians – in traditional while cumbia clothing and sombrero vueltiao hats – perform the accompanying music in the background.
