Colombia
I formed a youth group focused on learning and presenting traditional Afro-Colombian music and dancing styles. A USAID SPA grant through Peace Corps Colombia provided the initial funding for the group to purchase materials and make traditional drums, flutes and other percussion instruments as well as uniforms for two traditional Colombian styles (cumbia and mapalé). In this photo (taken earlier this week) we are presenting a cumbia dance in a neighboring community, our first presentation outside of town. Male dancers (in the forefront of this photo) – dressed in traditional while pants and shirts with red handkerchiefs and sobrero vueltiao hats – bow toward audience members while female dancers in the back carry candles and wave their flowing skirts.
