I formed a youth group focused on learning and presenting traditional Afro-Colombian music and dancing styles. A USAID SPA grant through Peace Corps Colombia provided the initial funding for the group to purchase materials and make traditional drums, flutes and other percussion instruments as well as uniforms for two traditional Colombian styles (cumbia and mapalé). In this photo I demonstrate my cumbia moves in a solo dance part during Sunday afternoon practice while other dancers – females in front with males behind – wait for their turns. With permission of the principal, we use the local high school for some of our practices including practices for a kids’ group we also started which includes over 50 participants between the ages of 5 and 11.
