Ecuador

My wife and I worked together on the Ecuadorian coast from April 2012 - January 2014. One of our most successful projects was Mujeres: Cambia, a micro-enterprise selling jewelry made of recycled materials. Using our complementary skills: my background as a finance consultant and hers as an arts nonprofit director, we helped the group to grow from 5 low-income women to 18. During our tenure, the group earned $25,000 in sales from stores in Ecuador, the US, and Europe; www.mujerescambia.com; and through events we were invited to by Hewlett Packard, the US Embassy, the Ecuadorian Government, and the Peace Corps. One of the innovations that led to our success was creating a Group Fund that represented 20% of sales being reinvested into the business. In the photo I am facilitating a discussion about how to spend the Group Fund money from one of our first big sales. This experience inspires me to continue using my skills to help under-served groups in the developing world.
