Ecuador
A Mayor's Message of Prevention I took this photo walking home through Guayaquil on November 30th, 2009. I had been working late in anticipation of the launch of a new campaign to raise public awareness of HIV by my counterpart organization, Fundación VIHDA, the next day in the schools and transit centers of the largest city in Ecuador. Having worked tirelessly against much resistance from a conservative government in a predominantly catholic country, I was pleasantly shocked to see a giant red ribbon hung from the Mayor's office in the municipal building, gently blowing in the early evening breeze. If the message of prevention was supported by the highest office in the city, then there was truly hope for change.
