This is a "miga," or work party, organized by members of the Shuar community, San Louis. This area is in the upper Amazon basin just east of the Cordillera de Cutucu in the province of Morona-Santiago. The miga is excavating a portion of a pipeline route to bring potable water to their community and the nearby community of Tiasha. This portion of the route was particularly difficult since it was excavated along a stream with alluvium cobble. It was also in deep jungle; we would see panther signs at our work site in the mornings. The members of the miga took their labor seriously, painting their faces prior to beginning their day's work as if preparing for battle. The Shuar were a warrior society called the "Jivaro" by the early Spanish. Though the Shuar are not as war-like as in their past, they remain a proud and independent people. It was a pleasure to work with the San Louis community.
