HIV-Free Future For World AIDS Day, December 1, 2011, my counterpart and I put together a testing day and video show event in my town, Krobo, Central Region, Ghana. For the testing part we encouraged all community members to test. Our focus was specifically on adolescents and kids in JHS (Junior High School). The rationale was the earlier adolescents become responsible for their health and are exposed to the testing culture, the more likely and less intimidating testing will be in the future. After participants tested they received this beautiful beaded ribbons to show that, not only were they aware of HIV/AIDS, but that they supported prevention and knowledge of their individual status. Knowing your status today can encourage you to plan your future better for tomorrow. This photo is of one of the JHS students. He required a lot of encouragement to take the test but was elated after he had done so. This picture shows myself giving him his HIV ribbon.
