A rare Friday afternoon (October 20, 2011) at a School for Special Education in Jamaica. Students of all ages, faculty and staff gathered spontaneously from around campus to laugh, sing and dance to the drums during lunch recess! The only day I had thought to bring my camera to school, where I was a P.C. Volunteer SpEd. Teacher, I loved the opportunity to capture the joy of these special needs children and young adults, as music inspired the release of their positive energy.Unbeknownst to me at the time, that day would become my final day at the school, as I had to suddenly return to the U.S. for family reasons, leaving my Peace Corps service early. This photo serves as a vivid memory of the resilient nature of these struggling students in a strict environment, and their capacity to love, laugh and sing, as well as the caring connection between the entire campus community. I will always be deeply grateful for this moment, so serendipitously recorded.
