Kazakhstan
This photo was taken in the Sharwa Bazaar in Kazakhstan sometime in winter, 2005-2006. They ran a stationary shop and when they realized I was American, asked desperately for me to take their picture. "We want to be seen in America," they told me. I was happy to accomodate. This love affair with all things American was a common discovery over my two years. Angry, disbelieving at our aggression in Iraq, and therefore distrusting of the American government, the people in Kazakhstan still held onto a belief in the goodness of the people of America.
