Kenya

Maurice and Paka I finally made it back to my respective Peace Corps country after 9 years (Kenya 02'-04') and was able to find my counterpart, Maurice Siboko in my old village I lived in. I have not had any correspondence over the years and decided to just take a chance and see if he and his family were still in the area. Found a young man with a dirt bike, who drove me through intricate dirt paths, hills, maize fields and, finally, there he was working in his "shamba" in beautiful Western Kenya. The two biggest smiles appeared before the world that day; a few tears as well from my side. Some small talk in kibukusu, then some kiswahili and a touch of English is all we needed to catch up and we headed back to house where this picture was taken. Maurice still amazed and in awe with a smile. I stayed the week with him and his family, and there I was treated like his son the entire time I stayed...just like when I worked with him during my service.
