Let's Go: Learning a Third Language In the school where I worked in Darkhan Village, Kyrgyzstan, students like these two 3rd-grade girls use the cyrillic alphabet in all their classes. They can speak Kyrgyz and Russian, but learning English is difficult, because they have to learn a completely different alphabet. The colorful English textbooks pictured here guide them along. My school had a small computer lab as well, so the kids could utilize the CD Rom and play interactive games that elicited speech from them in English, their third language. I bought these books in the capital city of Bishkek, after receiving a private donation from some friends in the U.S., and then brought them by marshrutka to Darkhan.
