Recently Peace Corps Lesotho and Grassroot Soccer brought together 18 Peace Corps Volunteers and Basotho Counterparts from their communities participated in Grassroot Soccer's first ever Peace Corps Lesotho SKILLZ Girl Workshop at Malengoane Lodge in Nazareth, Lesotho. Grassroot Soccer is a non-profit organization that uses the power of soccer to fight against HIV by providing young people with knowledge, skills, and support to remain HIV free. It is a simple, but powerful connection between soccer and life that helps young people understand health messages, stay strong when faced with challenges of peer pressure and protect themselves and others from HIV and AIDS. It speaks to youth through a language they know best, soccer. The workshop trained PCVs and their counterparts in every single practice they would co-facilitate in their communities. A large part of the program is actually going outside and playing soccer, therefore, in the workshop we did that too! On the soccer field PCVs and their counterparts truly displayed their competitive side and you could tell GRS had succeeded in a short period of time empowering these individuals to play a sport they are not always comfortable or empowered to do so! In this image the team spirit and camaraderie GRS creates is clearly evident; connecting PCVs more deeply to their counterparts and communities. HIV Calendar
