Volunteers Carry Water for Construction of a Peace Corps-supervised Baby Clinic Facility I took this photo in early 1967 in Malawi. It shows local volunteers carrying water to the masons constructing our baby clinic. A year prior, we began conducting a child health clinic in an impoverished area with an alarmingly high infant mortality rate. The clinic focused on malnutrition in infants, offering examination by medical staff and nutritional education for mothers. Because we lacked a facility, we were forced to conduct our program outdoors. My Peace Corps partner and I decided to build a permanent structure for the clinic. We were helped by a $2,000 grant from the U.S. Embassy. By the end of my planned two-year stint, construction was just starting. I remained in Malawi an extra year to oversee the construction, using local volunteer labor and abandoned bricks. I have been told that the baby clinic building became the centerpiece of a flourishing public health program that saved the lives of many children.
