In my first few months at site, my counterpart and I traveled to Kashoni village, on the other side of some large hills from my site next to Mulanje Mountain, to teach a cooking demonstration to an HIV support group. The group decided at our first meeting that they wanted to learn how to make peanut butter, so they gathered the materials themselves. When we returned to teach them, they were prepared and excited. We made peanut butter together, pounding it with a ntondo ndi musi, mortar and pestle. Afterwards, everyone tried it. Months later, I heard from a sitemate near me that the group had traveled down to his site to meet with a different support group and that they had taught them how to make peanut butter in exchange for learning how to make soy milk.
