In this picture you see the women of Sikoloton learning about a solar shea nut dryer made possible through SPA funding. In 2008 the Shea Butter producers of Samabogo formed a government recognized Coop for the improvement of shea butter production. One of the parts of the project was to dry the shea nuts in the sun instead of on a smoke drier. A challenge was that shea nuts ripened during the rainy season when women were working in the fields. Drying the nuts on a smoker did not require the women to move the shea nuts into a covered space during the rain. However, drying the nuts in the sun does require someone to protect them from the rain; someone would need to stay home from the fields to tend the shea nuts. This solar dryer here protects the nuts from the rain, and allows the women to go to the fields. When finished, this dryer would have PVC piping for ribs and be covered with clear plastic.
