I had been at my site for a couple of weeks when I took this picture so it was early November 2009. My site, Sebanso, was a rural farming community accessible by bike with about 300-600 people depending on the season. I knew my skin color would be a shock but the boy in this photo was beyond terrified. It was the first time in my life I'd been the minority and it was a realization I came to value and appreciate. Before this point, my service was all about me but this moment, made me focus on him.
