My work is to help the people in the communities around Parque Nacional Volcán Nevado de Colima understand and appreciate the importance of the resources of their park through improved information and interpretation. The park is difficult to get to: the access road is steep and rough, there is no public transportation and most people do not have cars. Yet in the face of changing climate, the park is a critical component of the ecosystem. We are bringing the park to the people through a series of festivals in the towns around the park. In April 2014, I watched a family enjoying the exhibits that I and another volunteer had helped create. The family was actively talking about the animals of the park (and later, looking at the other exhibits about the trees, flowers, water, ecosystems, and other park resources). As I looked closely, it came to me that they represented exactly who we were really trying to reach! That is why it was a life-defining moment.
