Mongolia

This photo was taken at the school of nursing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on December 2nd, 2009. My counterparts and I wrote a grant to a local agency asking for condoms and educational materials. We received them plus t-shirts and each of my counterparts classes made one poster about HIV/AIDS. On the day of December 2nd with the help of all my counterparts and a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, Cristiana, the students decorated the halls with their posters and we had student volunteers go class to class to give out condoms, play games (i.e. how does one get HIV/AIDS) and also held a seminar given by a Mongolian professor from the school. We then had students come outside and form their own AIDS awareness ribbon. It was -40C outside and the ground was frozen but my students were more than happy to make a ribbon. This was the first AIDS Day my school had held and this picture symbolizes the importance of community involvement to create a greater good.
