Niger

Niger

I took this photo during my first year as a PCV in Niger in 1994. The photo shows my team having a meeting about projects, venting frustrations, and just having fellowship together. We were called the "Goure" team because we were all assigned to villages in the Goure Department. We were the furthest PCV group from the capital city of Niamey. It took us about 3 days to travel from our villages to the capital in local transportation. Villagers were always curious about us and wondered what we did and ate. This group came by to say HI, pose for a photo op, and pretty much spy on us to see what the foreigners (aka "anasaras") were up to. There is a hammock hanging above as this was a popular furniture item for PCVs. We ate usually at night by kerosene lanterns after the sun set and the temperature cooled down. A plastic bottle of oil and container of salt were staple condiments. We ate from metal bowls. The clay jar (aka "takunya") holds cool drinking water.
