Sudan
Wau, Sudan, April 1963
The people of the Southern Sudan, mainly of Nilotic and Nilo-Hamatic origin, consists of the Dinka, Nuer, Shilluk-Acoli, Bari and Latuka tribes. In this heavily forested and swampy area, the people are primarily concerned with agriculture, in particular with cattle-rearing on pasture lands. In recent years, the Government of Sudan, assisted by the Food and Agriculture Organization, has introduced rice, coffee, sisal, cocoa and tropical fruit as new income-producing crops to raise the living standards of the people. Young Sudanese tote water jugs and other goods to market in Juba.
