Sudan
March 1962
A tenant farmer in the Gesira area of the Sudan is seen here with his camel en route to a ginning mill near Wad Medanio. The camel is loaded with two bags of freshly picked cotton from the farmer's plot. He is one of thousands of Sudanese farmers who have profited enormously from the Gezira Irrigation Scheme, a giant cooperative effort bewtween farmers and the government under which over 1,000,000 acres of desert land have been irrigated and cultivated.
