This photograph was taken on April 24th, 2013 on the Upper Suriname River in the jungles of Suriname. Two boys are pictured in the middle of boat race during an Earth Day celebration, culminating a series of events to educate communities about climate change and the environment, as well as encourage the market for renewable energy devices. The children partnered with local mentors and Peace Corps Volunteers to learn about the environment and then build canoes out of used plastic bottles. The boys decided to decorate their boat with an American flag and placed fourth in the race.
