A man arrived at the HIV testing site & asked if his 4 year old son could be tested. We only test adults but he said that the son was born in a rough environment. This indirectness implies that the parents are infected. The nurse asked about the mom & she had died. She told me she'd talk to the father to decide if testing is appropriate. The father & son when in & after 10 min, the boy came out with scornful eyes & holding his arm. He didn’t like being tested but he was cute. His father came out behind him & his face was completely blank. He walked to the desk & asked to fill out a form for the child. This indicated the child tested positive. I usually feel strong about AIDS issues but this situation struck a new chord. I felt a cry coming so I took a break from the testing & found a near by outhouse to lock myself in for a bit. I felt a little stronger after that was over. I went back to the clinic & continued testing. Some people had been waiting for over five hours.
