Gambia

This photo was taken during the HIV/AIDS Bike Trek in October 2011, in the small town of Badari, in The Gambia, West Africa. For two days, ten Peace Corps Volunteers partnered with a student and members of the faculty from Badari Basic Cycle School to teacher students in grades seven and eight about HIV transmission, prevention, and lessons on the importance of eliminating discrimination against People Living with HIV (PLH). The photo shows an activity the students completed as a class, where they had to identify activities that carried No Risk, Low Risk, or High Risk of transmitting HIV. As the image shows, the students were able to identify activities that would never transmit HIV from one person to another. The pictures helped students who had trouble understanding English, the official language spoken in classrooms in The Gambia.
