Uganda

This photo was taken in Biikira Parish, Rakai district, in Southern Uganda. It is on the wall of the maternity ward at St. Joseph Health Center III. The student, John Paul, is painting a mural that encourages pregnant HIV positive women to go for an early check up to receive support and education on possible ways to prevent spreading HIV to their babies. The mural was part of an 8 mural series where students of Rakai PTC came up with and illustrated 8 different scenarios of how HIV could be spread. For example, through not using condoms, by having multiple sexual partners, and through mother to child transmission during birth. The students were also responsible for dictating a message in local language that focused on how to prevent HIV. The translation of this message is: Pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS should go for early check up instead of relying on local/tribal medicines.
