I took this photo on May 9th, 2011 during Victory Day in Ukraine while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the country. Victory day in Ukraine is a time to commemorate triumph of the former Soviet Union (which Ukraine was once part of) over the Nazi rule during World War II. Many soldiers sacrificed their lives for this victory and are remembered on this day. This photo shows a young Ukrainian girl standing with her family in a moment of silence to honor war victims. As her community gathered to lay flowers at the eternal flame memorial, she turned and glanced at me for a moment, as if she was telling me a story. Her story symbolizes the future of Ukraine; a future of hope, triumph and freedom. Слава Україні! (Glory to Ukraine!)
