This photo shows children learning proper handwashing outside of Savusavu, Fiji, on May 3, 2013. As part of community outreach, I went with the Savusavu Hospital health care team to assist them with health presentations. Malnutrition is a major problem in this village, so while the hospital dietitian taught the women's group about nutrition and complementary feeding, I took the children to teach about germs and hygiene. We used glitter to represent germs passed through touching, coughing and sneezing. The children had fun washing off the glitter with soap and singing the hand washing song. Their mothers took advantage of some distraction-free time inside the community hall to watch a food demonstration by the hospital dietician, make a healthy menu, and munch on healthy fruits and vegetables.
