Liberia

Liberia

Unexpectedly entering a dance competition July 26 ‘14 (Independence Day) in Liberia For Liberia’s biggest holiday, my family and I went to the playground, which is a HUGE deal! My ma’ had her wedding there last month. My 10 siblings and neighborhood children and I entered the makeshift palm leaf dance party next door. I expected to see everybody dancing – WRONG! Instead they sat against the perimeter watching 1 or 2 people in the center. Apparently it was a holiday dance competition. As we settled in, a kid running the program came up and asked if I wanted to dance. With no time at all, my siblings answered for me and the MC yelled on the mic: “Do you wanna see a white person dance!?” The crowd went wild with excitement. The 10 of us were pushed into the center with some unknown song pounding and 200+ Liberians screaming in anticipation. I did the only thing you can so in a situation like that: throw down some moves! I heard so many kids yell “Teacher Kirby can dance!” Hands down, this is my favorite PC moment to date.
