Moldova

During my service I worked with two distinct groups, the elderly and the young. On this occasion my two worlds collided. At my Elderly Center a school group did a singing and dance performance for the elderly. I was asked to make a contest that the two groups could do together. The contest was to create a baba, or grandma, from some craft materials. In Moldova creativity is frowned upon. If the picture produced isn't just like the teacher's, then it is wrong. This was my hardest lesson to learn. Why, when I did craft projects with children, did they just replicate my example. In this contest I made no example. Both groups struggled a bit at first asking, "What do want it to looks like?" "What color should it be?" I replied that there was no right or wrong. It took a bit of time, but finally the two groups worked together and let their imaginations soar. It was a humbling and rewarding experience for me.
