The Gambia
One of the men rests and watches the women at work during the rice harvest at my village, Jakoi Sibrik. One of The Gambia's staple crops is rice, so the harvest is a very important time for the people. Especially living with a Joola family in a Joola village, being invited to help in the harvest was a huge honor. This particular rice field was one that was one by former president Yahya Jameh. My village harvests his rice fields every year, because they are of the same tribe, Joola. Being a volunteer in a Joola community I can expect rice for almost every meal, because they believe that you have not eaten a meal unless you have rice with it.
