Droughts in Southern Zambia have caused a cascade of problems: low yields of maize (corn) leading to a decreased income, meaning a mother struggles to buy food for her family or pay for school fees for her children, less fertilizer and seed are bought the following year, thus decreasing the production even more. But, in times of hardship, smiles and laughter bring everyone together. A simple walk through a field of sunflowers can lead to a fit of laughter for my favorite crew of young girls.
