SPA Grant: Need for English Books and Materials in Dilijan State College, Dilijan, Armenia Photo made in October , 2011 is of students studying English using photocopies of texts and exercises in English taken from 1950's Russian/English books. These were the only materials the Armenian teacher had for use in English classes at this college attended by 14-21 year old Armenian students trying to prepare for a career. The classroom used was in disrepair and had no heat which made it miserable for learning and studying. The need for adequate teaching materials and an acceptable environment for learning prompted the SPA grant application. Students expressed a desire for something new and in color as well as texts which applied to their ages and interests. The need for learning English is great in a country where jobs are limited and English is needed for employment outside the small town. The college repaired a new room on the sunny side of the building as their contribution to the project and welcomed the addition of updated English materials for their students.
