This photo is the product of a week-long girls' leadership camp that I co-coordinated as a secondary project with five other volunteers on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde, in 2012. We transported approximately 30 top-scoring female students to Chã das Caldeiras, a community within the crater of an ancient volcano. They participated in a week of sessions on safe sex, healthy relationships, and career development. These sessions were led by Cape Verdean women who had become nurses, entrepreneurs, artists, and businesswomen. Each night, the girls grouped together by communities of origin to come up with a development plan within their towns. My group planned to open a Youth Center in Ponta Verde that would introduce after-school activities to students. To supplement these sessions and have some fun, we had four breakout groups that worked for a week to put together a dance presentation, music performance from instruments made out of recycled materials, a theater performance, and this art group that produced a mural representing Fogo. Each girl sketched a few things that made them proud to be Cape Verdean, and we combined all of their drawings to create a mural in the walled-in soccer stadium in Chã. It became a visual that represented a week of growth, new friendships, and excitement for the future.
