Maxi and Betu were two friends from Guinea-Bissau who moved to Fogo, my island of service, to help with a road construction project. We became fast friends, and it was routine during my second year of service for these two to come teach me different Cape Verdean and Guinean recipes they knew. After dinner the sun would set behind Brava and we would put on beautiful Cape Verdean music and dance on my front porch.
