Ecuador

My husband and I were Business Advising Volunteers in Ecuador from 2012-2014. My counterpart, a micro-enterprise called Mujeres: Cambia, started with 5 women making jewelry from paper for fun and turned into a business that sold over $25,000 of jewelry and accessories at stores in Ecuador, the US and Europe; at mujerescambia.com; and at events with HP, the Ministry of Culture, the US Embassy, and the Peace Corps. Due to our success, group members were asked to lead trainings of other volunteers and counterparts at the Peace Corps Training Center in Quito. The majority of group members had never left their village let alone traveled over 16 hours by bus to the capital city. Facing their fears, 4 women from the group traveled to a workshop on recycled art where we were the featured case study, leading presentations and teaching how to make paper beads. The women shone like stars in front of 100 new friends. That day I witnessed the power of paying it forward.
