Ecuador

My husband and I were Business Advising Volunteers through the Natural Resources Conservation Program in Ecuador from 2012-2014. My husband's counterpart is a youth group located in a coastal fishing village where we also lived. In addition to helping to run a cyber café and open a pizzeria, through a grant from Starbucks and the International Youth Foundation we created the Palmar Centro de Arte y Diseño. This art center served over 100 youth from elementary school through college. One of the most popular activities was an eco-club for elementary school kids on Saturdays. This image shows eco-club members along with my husband and a group of college volunteers who visited our town. This was a momentous event during my service because it represents the day that I realized I was no longer an outsider in my town. I was a trusted leader showing other volunteers our successful projects and helping them to learn, grow, and also act as leaders.
