El Salvador

This photo was taken at the trapiche (sugar mill) for my town in the municipality in El Salvador on January 31st, 2011. I'd been to the trapiche before, but was asked to actually help in this instance. I was shown how to stir the cane sugar sludge, but two of the kids from my town decided to take over because I was so bad at the task. I was going into my last six months of service and definitely felt like part of my town, but I think this moment demonstrated that we were family. We were able to laugh at each other, playfully tease each other, and weren't concerned about offending each other. That integration is what shaped my Peace Corps experience.
