Kirbati

This photo was taken on Tarawa atoll in the Republic of Kiribati, Feb 9, 2001. The back of the picture reads: It’s so pretty here, but scary too. I heard about global warming and I just wonder if it’s true? Being here sure makes it seem real. But, I guess I trust the US Government. They wouldn't send us here if they thought it was a threat. I asked Mikaio what he thought about Global Warming. He assured me it was nothing serious. You know, he said, God promised Noah to never flood the earth again. Its in the bible. He thought for a moment and then continued, people said Kiribati would go under the ocean in the 1980s and look, we are still here, so don’t worry. Today, Kiribati is predicted to be one of the first nations to be rendered uninhabitable due to global climate change. Although Peace Corps is no longer there, I have remained in service to this country through multiple academic pursuits focussing on climate change, migration, and population health in Kiribati. #driven
