Lesotho

In Lesotho, most of the young men in rural areas go to initiation schools as a rite of passage into adulthood. These schools are a completely secret ritual of the Basotho people. After 3 to 6 months, the newly recognized men come down from the mountains and are reunited with their families. After three days of songs, chants, and dances, the final ceremony comes to close. Bashemane is sacred tradition for the people in my village. It is a time of jubilant celebration but is often not shared with "village outsiders." After being at my site for a few months, I was beginning to earn the trust of my community. During one of the rituals, I was invited into the circle to document this special moment. This was a defining moment of my service because this was so symbolic. I was no longer seen as a "village outsider." I was seen as one of them. I was recognized as a Mosotho.
