Liberia
Although a student of photography, Liberia served to provide what I later came to understand to be an artistic experience. This experience occurs when you know you have captured something of beauty. This home in Fortsville, Liberia was one such occasion for me. Since we returned home from Liberia, going on 40 years ago now, I have shown my Liberia photographs to thousands of people. Americans are fascinated by images of Liberia but especially of this home on stilts. This photograph initiated many conversations – opportunities to share stories about Liberia’s history and how the Peace Corps was an enriching experience, one that could not ever have been fully contemplated in advance of joining.
