Rural development work allowed me to travel widely in Liberia. I stopped on this day to take this B&W photograph of a late 1900 home. Having survived nearly 100 years I knew that the schools and clinics we built must be of an equally high standard as this 1900s home. On this visit I met an “old ma” who was of Americo-Liberian (AL) descent. The young girl who lived with this “old ma” and the young man joined in our visit. I learned much about Liberia’s ethnic diversity and the historical basis for the architectural design of their homes. I also came to understand how ALs and indigenous tribal people had become dependent on each other.
