Madagascar

A woman runs towards a trash can to dispose of a "used" condom in a race against fellow villagers. By educating rural Malagasy on HIV/AIDS prevention, Peace Corps Volunteers hope to reduce transmission rates and increase awareness. In 2010, twenty Volunteers biked around Madagascar's Lake Alotra. We held an HIV/AIDS awareness festival in each town along the way, complete with games, skits and educational booths. In one of the games, highlighted here, teams of men and women complete the steps of proper condom use as a relay race. In this instance the women were the fastest as the entire village cheered them on.
