Madagascar

As part of Madagascar's World Malaria Day event in April 2014, the community participated in a road race and malaria education event to bring awareness to malaria in our community. The village is surrounded by the protected forest which is home to over 1500 people. The members of the forest communities, attended the event, some walking as far as 3 hours to attend. In this photo, the volunteer, Antoinette Pick-Jones, works with women from the furthest forest community during net care education. They had just finished learning how to wash nets; however, none of them were tall enough to hang the nets on the tree to hang in the shade. We all had a great laugh because I was the only one tall enough to reach the branches! Seeing them come 3 hours by foot to attend the event was inspiring to me. So often as a PCV you can feel alone in your work, but when the community really participates and makes the work their own, it makes you believe change will happen!
